Happy Birthday to Me

Me!

I'm 48 today. A little too close to 50 for comfort, but not worth obsessing over.. it beats the alternative, as they say.

My birth date is shared by some creative people: Sting, born in 1951 too; Mike Rutherford of Genesis, born 1950; Don McLean (American Pie) 1945; Graham Greene, 1904; Bud Abbot 1895; Groucho Marx 1890; Wallace Stevens (American poet) 1879; Mohandas Ghandi 1869! Cool..

I spent some time web searching October 2, 1951 but it seems nothing AT ALL happened that day. In fact, if you plug that day into this history channel site you get a BLANK PAGE. I've been told that Oct. 2, 1951 corresponded with the second day of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashana), and that a week later when they took me home from the hospital, there was a big ice storm in Montreal. A bit early for ice, but who am I to argue with Dad..

I'll have to content myself, then, with other happenings in 1951. In no particular order:

  • Mickey Mantle joined the NY Yankees, who went on to win the World Series (yawn).
  • Libya became an independent state.
  • "The King and I" opened on Broadway.
  • General MacArthur was relieved of his command in Korea.
  • The heart-lung machine was invented.
  • Chrysler introduced power steering.
  • Marlon Brando starred in "A Streetcar Named Desire".
  • J.D. Salinger published "The Catcher in the Rye", which Younger Son happens to be reading at this very moment, for his English class. I hadn't realized it was that old.
Then again, I am that old too! Or as Hubby insists on pointing out, I'm in my 49th year, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
