Don't Get me Started

QUEBEC (CP) - A Quebec City-area man has won the right to have a death-head tattoo removed at taxpayers expense, arguing it adversely affects his mental health.

..The cost of removing the tattoo, a large blue and grey caricature of a death-head that covers most of (his) upper right arm, has been estimated at between $3,500 and $5,000.

This, while 1000 people in Quebec (650 in the Montreal area alone) are waiting between six and nine months for heart surgery, and statistics predict that three to six of them each month won't survive the wait*.

This, while over 400 people have been sent to the U.S. for radiation treatment for cancer, at the government's expense, because we don't have sufficient resources to treat them*.

I guess I should be thankful that my father only had to wait two weeks with a bowel lesion that had perforated his bladder. The more I think about it, the more amazed I am that he survived.

Never again will I gloat about the Canadian system of socialized medicine. While the US system certainly has very serious faults, including outrageous insurance costs and a mindset that too often puts profit and liability before patient care, at least it is POSSIBLE to get quality treatment there. Here, it just doesn't exist.

Oh and if anyone in the Quebec government is reading this (hah, fat chance, I'm lucky if they don't try to close me down for being unilingually English).. I think that a nice pair of 1-carat (each) diamond earrings and a matching tennis bracelet would significantly improve MY mental health.

Speaking of my mental health.. yesterday was the day I looked forward to for the last two months. I stayed at home and did as little as possible. Maybe that sounds boring but it wasn't.. my batteries needed recharging in the worst way.

*Recent articles from the Montreal Gazette, supporting and expanding upon those statistics:

Waiting can be fatal
Wait for surgery longer

Linque Du Jour: Three Ways to Hypnotize a Chicken

More silliness.. from the Old Farmer's Almanac website. Unfortunately it doesn't say why anyone would want to hypnotize a chicken.

The rest of the website is fun too.. detailed weather reports, recipes, gardening tips, houshold hints and of course the famous manure guide.
